Maureen Paley is pleased to present Lars Laumann’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. Shut up Child, This Ain’t Bingo, 2009, is a video installation that tells the true story of the relationship between Norwegian artist Kjersti Andvig and her collaborative partner Carlton Turner, a Texan death row inmate. Combining his own photographic and video documentation with found material, Laumann focuses on the 3-month period from the end of the couple’s artistic work together until Turner’s execution and how during this time their relationship shifted from professional to romantic.
This will be Laumann’s first solo exhibition at the gallery having previously been included in The Hidden at Maureen Paley in 2008. His work Morrissey Foretelling the Death of Diana has also been shown at White Columns, New York in 2007 and Berlinmuren was included in the 5th Berlin Biennale in 2008. He will be the headline visual artist at the Galway Arts Festival in Ireland this summer. Other recent exhibitions include Monumento Mori, Astrup Fearnley Museet for Moderne Kunst, Oslo in 2008, There Is Always A Machine Between Us, SF Cameraworks, San Francisco, The Back Room/Société Anonyme, Kadist Art Foundation, Paris and EAST International, Norwich, all in 2007. Laumann was born in Oslo, Norway. He currently lives and works in Berlin.
