Maureen Paley is pleased to present new work by Wolfgang Tillmans.
Wolfgang Tillmans is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential photographic artists at work today. In the past year Tillmans has had solo shows at the Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid and the Neuer Aachener Kunstverein, whilst also exhibiting at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the Berlin Biennale, the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto and the ICA, Boston amongst others. In the same period two new monographs have also been published; one in the ‘Parkett’ series and ‘Burg’ published by Taschen. Tillmans has also released two artist books – entitled ‘Total Solar Eclipse’ and ‘Wako Book 1999’.
Space Between Two Buildings and Soldiers – The Nineties will be Tillmans’ third solo show at Interim Art and will take place at both 21 Beck Road and the new Interim Art annexe, located at 21 Herald Street, E2.
Choosing Space Between Two Buildings to make a formal departure from his typical mode of installation, Tillmans will present a smaller number of large scale framed works. Encompassing Tillmans’ typically diverse range of subject matter, Space Between Two Buildings focuses on the minutiae of everyday reality in an attempt to distill the sublime essence that is obscured yet lies inherent within it.
In contrast, Soldiers – The Nineties is Tillmans’ latest mono-thematic body of work (following on from the ‘Concorde’ and ‘Total Solar Eclipse’ projects) and his first utilising found imagery. Acquiring an added poignancy given recent world events, Soldiers represents the culmination of a decade-long study into the mediated portrayal of young men in uniform.
To coincide with this exhibition the book ‘Soldiers – The Nineties’ will be published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, Cologne and will be available at the gallery for £15.00
